My Son Is Home

Today I am 3/4 full. Gib arrived home yesterday safe & sound after canoeing 70 miles in 8 days in Canada. That's a pretty great adventure, eh? They caught dinner of Northern Pike, big ones too - like 42"!!! - bass, and trout. The guys had a great trip, just challenging enough and beautiful scenery, good weather, enjoyable company. Now I hear talk of another Philmont trip within the next year for the Venture Crew. The Troop got to go 2 years ago when another troop had to back out, but the Venture Crew's bid got pulled for 2012, so Gib will get to go twice. He better get to work starting on that Eagle Project in between now and then (hint hint).

I am proud of my boy. He has a laid back maturity balanced with a fun wit. I am glad he is home. Today I will be thinking how blessed I am to have him here as another family grieves their loss.

I am going with a couple of friends to stand on the side of the road to be ready for a big funeral procession for a fallen Marine. Word has is that the Westboro wackos are going to be there (the people who by any definition do not act like Christians and whose message is that God Hates and they pray for more dead soldiers at the funerals of those who have died). In response, the Patriot Guard Riders, and retired military and law officers have organized this event. We are coming out in force carrying our American flags to act as human shields for this family to spare them the very sight of these people and their agenda of hate on their day of mourning as they lay their son and soldier to rest. The family will see there are many more who honor his service to his country and who respect them.

Awesome. The Westboro wackos actually picketed our church one Sunday morning, which turned out to be a lot of hype for nothing. Our pastor told us they hope someone will get upset enough with their inflammatory messages to strike them, at which point they sue, which is how they make their money. Sad, and will be thinking of you (and the family of the Marine) today.

It is sad what people do. I hope it all goes well.

And the trip sounds like it was a blast. Luck guy getting to go twice!

Sad little people, leading a sad little life. If they don't get the attention they want they mostly just fade away. I hope this is the case with the group in your area.

Sounds like Gib had a great time! What a grand adventure!!
